National Council for Homoeopathy (NCH)

DHMS (Diploma in Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery)

BHMS (Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery)

حکومت نے National Council for Tibb اور National Council for Homoeopathy کو ملا کر National Council of Traditional, Alternative and Complementary Medicine

Status of Homeopathic Doctors in Pakistan

 Legal Status

Homeopathy has clear legal recognition and regulation in Pakistan under the Unani, Ayurvedic and Homoeopathic Practitioners Act, 1965 (UAH Act 1965).

Under this Act:

The National Council for Homoeopathy (NCH)

was established to regulate homeopathic education, registration, and practice.

- Only registered or listed homeopaths are legally allowed to practice. Unregistered individuals practicing homeopathy can face penalties.

 Education and Registration

The primary qualification is the DHMS. (Diploma in Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery), typically a 4-year program followed by an apprenticeship.

Some institutions also offer the BHMS (Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery).

- Successful candidates must register with the National Council for Homoeopathy and appear on the official list of practitioners.

According to the NCH, thousands of practitioners are registered, and dozens of recognized colleges operate across the country.

Use of the Title “Doctor”

Under the law, a homeopath may use the title Homoeopathic Doctor”, with both words given equal prominence. Using only the word “Doctor” (without “Homoeopathic”) is generally considered misleading and can fall under restrictions imposed by the Allopathic System (Prevention of Misuse) Ordinance.

 Limitations and Restrictions

Homeopaths are not allowed to perform surgery.

They cannot issue birth/death certificates or medical fitness certificates that are reserved for registered medical practitioners.

- Prescribing allopathic medicines or practicing allopathic medicine is outside their scope; doing so can be treated as quackery.

Current Situation (2024–2026)

The NCH remains active and continues to oversee registration, examinations, and college regulation.

The government has proposed merging the National Council for Tibb and the National Council for Homoeopathy into a single body called the National Council of Traditional, Alternative and Complementary Medicine. This proposal has faced opposition from homeopathic and traditional medicine practitioners.

In some provinces (notably Punjab), recruitment of homeopathic doctors in government hospitals has faced bans or been treated as a “dying cadre,” though demands for restoration continue.

Homeopathic medicines are regulated by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) under the category of Alternative Medicines.

Summary:

Homeopathic doctors are legally recognized practitioners in Pakistan, provided they are registered with the NCH and practice within their defined scope. They are not considered equivalent to allopathic (MBBS) doctors but are officially recognized as practitioners of an alternative system of medicine.
